Irrigation Diversion
Sustainable agriculture and the rural quality of life are top priorities in the community, and to NFRIA. Agriculture in the valley is dependent on irrigation from the North Fork. However, the unstable nature of the river has caused extensive damage to irrigation facilities and most farmers cannot afford to repair them properly. In the past, ditch companies would inadvertently contribute to this destabilization by hiring bulldozers for a few hours every summer to construct temporary gravel “push-up” dams to divert their decreed amount of water into irrigation canals and ditches. |
| Rebuilding irrigation diversions provides reliable and efficient irrigation water while conserving in-stream flows. NFRIA designs permanent, low-head, rock diversion structures with concrete head gates at the point of diversion. This conserves water and reduces maintenance by diverting a full decree of water and leaving the rest in the river. Fish are able to migrate upstream and recreational boats can safely pass downstream. Most importantly, by eliminating bulldozer maintenance the channel is allowed to stabilize and vegetation to reestablish. Of the twelve major irrigation diversions on the North Fork Gunnison River, NFRIA has reconstructed seven and was instrumental in the design and reconstruction of an eighth. These projects collectively are creating a low-cost, water-conserving irrigation system for agriculture, while greatly benefiting landowners and other river users. | Click for a detailed informational brochure on NFRIA, its past successes, and its goals
